Details: Dreamy, neutral toned handmade suzani wall tapestry featuring two rows of five large geometric ovals resembling a sunburst design. This particular suzani is made up of several pieces of cotton that have been sewn together, which makes hand stitching more manageable and allows for more than one person to work on a piece at the same time. Although the piece has loops to hang it on a wall, it would also make a beautiful bedspread or could be used to upholster or cover a large piece of furniture or a sofa.
Dimensions: 188"w x 1/8"d x 92"h (15.5ft x 7.5ft)-10 lbs
Condition: In overall excellent condition and has been professionally cleaned. The thread has become loose in a few spots throughout the piece and there is a tiny metal grommet sewn into one of the ovals that is intentional, yet the meaning is unknown (see detailed photos). A few minor spots on the border of the piece and some of the loops need reinforcing to hang. The primary photo shows the piece folded and hung up against a window to see how the light can come through it and the secondary photo shows the piece laid out on a floor and shot in panorama mode due to its size.
A Note About Suzanis: These beautiful textiles are expertly crafted by skilled artists, and their size and density of stitches are awe-inspiring. The stitching is what gives these textiles their name. The word suzani is derived from the Persian word suzan, which means needle. A Suzani is a hand-embroidered, decorative textile made in Central Asia, particularly Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. These large textile panels were made by nomadic tribes and were an integral part of their nomadic lifestyle. Since large, solid pieces of furniture were not conducive to a nomadic lifestyle, they were also used for table and bed linens, prayer mats and seating.
